Sonic Ceremony

17-19th of May 2024

As we are prohibited from expressing our emotions in public, we return to music and art which allows us to collectively resist.

Zilzal was initially created as a sound platform but as our roots are Palestinian, we cannot be involved in sound without politics. With everything happening back home, we have started to shift from amplifying sound across borders to amplifying the voices of our people and what they are experiencing.

Recognising art as a form of resistance, we are creating this moment in May to gather those who have been canceled or silenced for simply being Palestinian and those who are supporting the cause to share our thoughts, talk, learn, rest in community, deliver messages and express our emotions in a safe space.

Zilzal's sonic ceremony* will take place over 3 days, starting Friday evening on the 17th of May and ending on Sunday evening, 19th, as an intimate gathering with a limited capacity of 250 participants. Cala Fou, the ceremonial space, is an old textile warehouse complex turned into a cooperatively organised “eco-industrial, post- capitalist colony”.

Expect more than 20 artists all with their own unique sound and charm, embracing experimental soundscapes with dj sets and live shows influenced by a wide array of different genres, spanning from breaks, drum ‘n’ bass, jungle, ambient, hip hop, beats and more.

Besides the sound, there will be exhibitions, installations, home cooked Levantine food and a market.

The ticket price includes access to the festival for all days, space to camp and the RA fee. 50% of the festival profits will be donated to a Palestinian charity and RA have kindly agreed to also donate their fee profits.

*Sonic ceremony: An assembly in the reverence and presence of sound. A reflective exploration and mindful observance - it is communion in vibration.

**All music performances will be aired live on Radio Alhara
